William Tart, Age 26

William was the son of Silas and Jane Ellen Tart of 44 Dark Lane, Malinslee.

He had originally enlisted into the 10th battalion of the North Staffs but was serving with the 8th Battalion, when during the opening days of the battle of the Somme he was killed in action.

William fell on the 3rd July 1916 during a time in the battle after the disaster of the first day (1/7/16) that battalions were ordered into attack without much pre-planning and thought too objectives; regimental staffs were just trying to gain ground to recover from that fateful first day.
